Vélez Rubio, Fact Sheet


Vélez-Rubio is a town in the north of the province of Almería. Located in the south of the region of “Los Vélez”, it is the biggest town of the region and the first Andalusian town with which you will make contact when entering from the east. 

It is a village with an area of about 281,96 km² and it is located at 840 meters of altitude; its population is of about 6.555 inhabitants.


There are many places to visit in Vélez-Rubio. “La Iglesia de la Encarnación” is one of the most famous monuments that you can find here. It is located in the square of the town, next to the town hall. “El Palacio de las Damas Catequistas” is another of the most beautiful places to visit. It is located in the market street and very near to a convent. “El Parque del Mesón”, “La Fuente del Gato” and the swimming pool are other well known places in the town.


You can do many interesting things in Vélez-Rubio, for example, you can visit its famous museum where you can learn many things about the history of the town. However, if you want to do beautiful and exciting hiking trails, you can go to the Castellón’s ruines or to the Mahimón’s arc from where you can see the town in all its splendor.  


Dolores Rodríguez Sopeña was born in Vélez-Rubio. She is known all around the world after her beatification. 
Miguel Guirao Gea was born in Vélez-Rubio too and he was an important doctor of the time.
